Kickemuit Middle School
WARREN, RI
THE PROJECT
Inspired by an enthusiastic 8th grade science teacher passionate about the environment and hands-on learning, this project is bringing outdoor education to life.
Thrive Outside collaborated with the school leaders, teachers, and students to design a dynamic Outdoor Learning Zone tailored to the school’s needs. We also founded our Fresh Air Funders Collaborative to help fund the project.
Phase I construction of this project is currently underway, complete with a pavilion designed and constructed in partnership with Mt. Hope High School’s construction students. We look forward to completing the full vision in the coming year!

“I’m just really excited for the students to be outside and to connect with the outdoors. We spend far too much time indoors on screens and not socializing with one another, and not learning from one another. Being old school and an old timer, we were always outside. So, you know, I’m really hoping to bring the curriculum from inside to outside, incorporating nature, real life experiences. And I know my teachers are excited too. This is a long time in the making. They talked about it when I came on board 5 years ago, but then there was covid so everything ground to a halt. But now we are gaining momentum and I’m really really excited.”
