Elementary
School

PORTSMOUTH, RI

THE PROJECT

What began as a simple idea for a rain garden and outdoor classroom has grown into a vibrant 16,750-square-foot outdoor learning space!

Thrive Outside teamed up with the school to create five unique areas that support hands-on, cross-curricular learning. The space also includes smart stormwater features like a rain garden, vegetated swale, and permeable pavers.

Melville’s teachers joined Thrive Outside’s year-long professional development program to bring outdoor learning to life.

This exciting project came together thanks to amazing partnerships with the Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.

“Thrive Outside has been an integral part of the development and completion of our outdoor learning adventure zone. The design plan developed, the dedication to the project and the overall ease of working with Thrive made what seemed to be an impossible project, possible.  We are so excited about the opportunities that our new space will provide for students.  We continue to collaborate with Thrive through scheduled professional development activities, that have opened our teacher's eyes to a whole new level of learning that can take place outdoors. I would highly recommend Shannon and her Thrive Outside team for any of your outdoor learning needs.”
